Amrun Project – Rio Tinto Weipa

PMG have been very busy on Rio Tinto’s Amrun project (Weipa) for most of 2016. We have been working for a number of clients completing a range of tasks including:

Loading and carting rock and equipment to support Goodline’s River Terminals project. This has involved moving, by tug and barge, approximately 50 000T of bulk materials (ranging from armour rock to pavement) with 4 x tugs and barges in the cycle. This project has involved over 50 PMG personnel - mainly marine crews and Townsville based support staff. Our marine facility in Townsville is being used as the base for this work, and all material is being stockpiled on site and loaded onto barges at our facility. We also have our spudded 120ft barge “PMG121” on site in Weipa, supported by our 16m tug “Sailfish”. This gear is being used to dock all the rock barges, as well as ferry various items of plant and equipment across the Hey River. The project has run very smoothly and is due for completion in July 2016.

Fitout of one of our 120ft barges “PMG122” to act as a dredge spoil loading barge, then towing to site in Weipa. This work was completed for JanDeNul, and involved a very quick turnaround on the barge fitout work at our Townsville marine facility. The “mud cannon” as it was dubbed, was 12m high, and allowed a 750mm diameter dredge discharge pipe to load 90m split hopper barges evenly. The system worked exactly as designed and the client was very happy with the result, especially under the very tight timelines. In addition to the barge work, PMG performed a number of commercial diving tasks for JanDeNul on site in Weipa, and provided a cyclone mooring.

We have just mobilised to commence piling operations for the river terminals. We are driving 45 piles ranging from 750mm dia. To 1050 mm dia. To do this we have completed construction of a 12m high / 3 gate hydraulic piling frame, which can hydraulically tilt to drive raker piles. We have also fitted 900mm dia. Spuds to our 54m x 18m barge “PMG182”, and have onboard a 6 point mooring system and a selection of piling hammers including a Juntaan HHK 10 12 14S, Dawson 4500H, and an ICE 44B vibrohammer. The work will be supported by a 150T crawler crane, and the barge is being towed to site and supported on site by our 24m / 16T Bollard Pull tug “Black Panther”.
