Townsville Sea Leads

Scope of work

During cyclone Yasi in 2011, a number of tubular steel monopile, and tri pile beacon structures, marking the only shipping channel into Townsville Port were significantly damaged.

This created significant shipping restrictions into Townsville, and PMG were awarded a project to fabricate and urgently install :

  • 5 x 1200mm diameter steel tubular monopole beacons. Typically 36m long and 16mm wall thickness.

  • Fit out with pile caps, aluminium top platforms, aluminium lattice towers, ladders, lighting and daymarks

Piles were painted off site, then road transported to PMG’s wharf, where they were spliced, capped, and towed to site.

PMG utilised a jack up barge, 250T crawler crane, hydraulic piling frame, and Junntan impact hammer to complete the works.

After completion of the new leads, the remnants of the old structures were removed utilising PMG divers and vibrohammer equipment.
